Cancer or a tumour can be considered as an uncontrolled growth over and beyond what is normal, of the body’s cells either due to a genetic cause, an environmental cause or an interaction between genes and the environment. The uncontrolled growth of cells can affect the primary site and spread to other sites in the body. Cancers are an important contributor to the magnitude of non-communicable diseases in India and the mortality from non-communicable diseases in India. A significant proportion (nearly 50%) of cancer deaths can be prevented by early identification and modification of risk factors.
