The Peer Review Process

Manuscripts published in many scientific journals focused on evidence based healthcare or medicine pass through a process of peer review. Peer review essentially implies a process of review of the manuscript by independent peers knowledgeable in the field and with an aim to improve the quality of research reporting. Many researchers believe that publication in a peer reviewed journal is a vindication of the quality of their research. The process of peer review assumes significance as research is increasingly mandated as a necessary step for career advancement and research output increases.

It is important that authors, researchers, reviewers, editors and most important, clinicians who try to translate or carry findings from research studies into clinical practice, understand the strength and limitations of the peer review process.

In this presentation, we review the peer review process focused on reviews of healthcare research.
