Understanding Diagnostic Tests-Making Meaning of the Results

We have looked at What is Normal and have looked at the commonly used and more familiar parameters of diagnostic tests- Sensitivity, Specificity, Predictive Values – and their meaning, interpretation and limitations.

Now, we are ready to take the next step and look at “How can I use and communicate meaningfully the results of the test?”

We want to tell the patient “Based on this test result, this is the likelihood you have condition of interest” OR “Based on this result, this is the likelihood you do not have the disease”

How do we do that?
